Monday (4 hours of sailing)
0600 We cast off and head Caves Cove for breakfast, sailing most of the way.The weather is forecast to be very bad Tues (when we planned to dive The Pinnacles) so we motored all the way to To the pinnacles and dove the west wall but strted at the beach and really didn't get to the good stuff. Then we dove the East side of thw Pinnacles which was good but bad vis and currents even thoghh it was at tide change. We were told to make it to the inside of the islands but they let us stay at Butterfly bay (as long as we had a buoy to tie up to). We took a dingy over to the East side of Maureen's Cove. Spectacular dive to 11 metres from the midway alogn the wall North to the point. Lots of big fish, tunnels and vertical pipes. Marco and Jennifer cooked Goulash...awesome!
Tonight's movie: Blazing Saddles.
Tuesday
This morning we dove along the West wall of the small lobe of butterfly bay and it was OK. Then we sailed in heavy winds, reefing the sails, along the East side of Hayman to Blue Pearl Bay and the crew did a dive at the North end. Then we motored heavy rain to Nara Inlet for the night.
Tonight's movie: Blazing Saddles.
Wednesday We left Nara Inlet and headed for the underwater observatory which is near the narrow channel between Hook Island and Whitsunday Island. Turns out the observatory has been abandoned due to damage from last month's typhoon but the crew went in and had a drink at the backpacker resort nearby. Phil and I went around the corner to a great dive spot but found the visiblity was only a foot and we abandoned the dive. We then headed for a night at Hamilton Island to get showers, water, dinner and a few supplies and to tour the resort.
Thursday We left the dock about 7 and headed for a day at Whitehaven Beach. The crew went ashore for about an hour. We decided to dive Border Island the next day but because of the weather, there was nowhere within 2 hours sailing to anchor. We went all the eway to Moconna Inlet for the night and will get up early in the morning and head for Border Island. The night was interesting as it rained most of the night, and the March flies attacked .
